Master Your Day

A Five-Minute Review That Leads Somewhere

Close the day with three useful questions: what happened, what helped, and what will you change? Keep the review small enough to use tomorrow.

What happened? Start with the facts

An evening review does not need to become another unfinished project. Give it five minutes and a small space on paper or in a private note. The aim is not to retell the whole day. It is to leave yourself information you can use when tomorrow begins.

Start with one commitment that mattered. Write what you intended to do and what you actually did. "I planned to finish the outline and wrote the opening section" is more useful than "I was unproductive." It separates a real result from a broad judgment.

Include completed work even if it was not on the original list. Perhaps you handled an unexpected request or found a missing detail that the next step required. Record it accurately without using it to hide the unfinished commitment. Both can be true: something useful happened, and something still needs attention.

What helped? Notice what you can reuse

Look for a condition that made action possible. Was the material already open? Did you have a clear stopping point? Did you ask a question before getting stuck? Name the specific help instead of simply writing that you felt motivated.

Suppose you completed a short draft while waiting for an appointment because the outline was already in your notebook. The useful observation is not that every waiting period should become work time. It is that having the next step available helped on this occasion. Decide whether that preparation fits another part of your day.

Notice obstacles just as carefully. A missing link, an unclear instruction, and an overloaded schedule call for different adjustments. If you cannot tell what got in the way, write that down too. An honest question is more useful than a confident explanation you have not checked.

What changes? Choose one adjustment

Finish the review by choosing one thing to keep or change. You might prepare a document beforehand, ask for clarification, or reduce a task to a piece that fits the available time. Keep the adjustment connected to something you observed today.

Avoid turning the last minute into a complete redesign of your life. You do not have to solve every obstacle tonight. Select the one change worth trying next and leave the other ideas in a separate note. A review can end before every question has an answer.

Tomorrow, check whether that adjustment was useful. Keep it if it helped, revise it if it did not, and avoid treating one day as a final verdict. In your Daily MAP, Progress can include understanding your circumstances more clearly, not just checking another box.

YOUR NEXT ACTION

Set aside five minutes tonight. Write one sentence under each heading: what happened, what helped, and what changes. Circle the single adjustment you will try tomorrow.
